Okinawa Foodie: Fresh Fish from First Makishi Public Market

Okinawa Foodie: Fresh Fish from First Makishi Public Market

Just down the road from the main drag in Naha, is a public market where you can get pretty good deals on most things.  You can also get the freshest fist if you want to overpay for food.

In the First Makishi Public Market (In Naha, Okinawa, Japan), there is an aisle of live seafood sales on the first floor.  Here, you can buy live seafood and then send it up to the 2nd floor to be prepared for your meal.okinawa fish market okinawa fish market okinawa fish market okinawa fish market

Overpriced

For 8000 JPY, we purchased the following:

  • 2 sea urchins (fresh)
  • 1 pack of uni (already packaged)
  • 2 jumbo shrimp
  • 1 clam (fresh)

The Process

After making this purchase, it was then taking to the corresponding shop on the 2nd floor to be prepared for our meal.  The meal preparation cost was another 1000JPY.  Ordering a can of coca-cola was another 400JPY.  That’s a total of 9400JPY for an average sized meal.  Before even starting to eat, I knew this was an awful deal. It’s hard to spend that much at a nice restaurant in Naha, but that’s how much they’re charging at this food court.

Observation (could be a fact):

It seems like each seafood stall on the 1st floor has an agreement with a restaurant on the 2nd floor for food prep.

I really like sea urchin (uni), but one of the two we ordered wasn’t in good condition.  It appeared to be mostly liquid.  All in all, I wouldn’t go to the First Makishi Public Market Again again for fresh fish since I could spend less at a nice sushi restaurant and have the quality be guaranteed. I’d rather spend 780JPY and go to Mahoroba for noodles which is only a 5-minute walk away.
