Taipei Neighborhood Guide: Where to Stay in Taipei and What To Do in Taipei

In this post we’ll cover Where To Stay in Taiwan: A Taipei Neighborhood guide. I’ll recommend the best place to stay in Taipei and things to do in Taipei: nightlife, food, shopping and where to stay in Taipei for one night. We’ll also go over what to in Taipei districts that you’ll potentially be staying in.

Before getting in to this Taipei neighborhood guide, I’m going to strongly recommend getting a hotel/hostel/Airbnb close to a MRT station. Public transportation is cheap and fast in Taipei and the MRT runs from 05:00-00:00. Uber is also available and taxis are safe to use in Taipei.

For reference in this Taipei Neighborhood Guide, I’ll give 3 examples of hotels in each neighborhood:

  • FANCY: Over $80 USD
  • COMFORTABLE: Between $20-80 USD
  • BUDGET: Less than $20 USD

Taipei Neighborhood Guide: Where To Stay in Taipei And What To Do in Taipei

These are the 12 Taipei districts with their pros/cons to help you decide if this is the best area to stay in Taipei for you! Within each district, I’ll also include what to do in Taipei for that district.

1. Datong District

Datong District is #1 for a reason, it’s the best place to stay in Taipei if you’re looking for that old Taipei feel. Most people come to the Datong District just to experience the old city and it’s great for first time visitors to Taiwan. You won’t find any skyscraper hotels like the Intercontinental, but of all the Taipei districts, Datong District is the most authentic Taiwanese experience with these places to visit in Taipei.

Where To Go In Taipei’s Datong District:

  • Daodaocheng Theatre: Puppet theatre, opera, exhibitions and more!
  • Taipei Xiahai City God Temple: Pray for better luck in your love life
  • Daodaocheng Pier: Food and drinks along the pier. You can also rent bikes here and ride them along the river bike path. You can also catch a ferry here and take it all the way to Tamsui (Danshui).
  • Dihua Street: The oldest street in Daodaocheng and often used for filming movies and TV shows. It’s featured in “A Taiwanese Tale of Two Cities” on Netflix.
  • Yongle Market and many traditional shops for shopping and food!
  • Ningxia Night Market: It’s one long alley of food stalls. Unfortunately the alley is too small and it gets very crowded. They could easily push back the carts to make more room since it’s along a very large street. Otherwise this is still a great place for cheap late-night eats.
  • Museum of Contemporary Art: This is Taipei’s MOMA
  • Zhongshan Station: In this area, you’ll find many local fashion stores, hip cafes, and extremely good restaurants. My favorite places to visit in Taipei for food are Bake Cheese Tart, La Pasta (get the Thai Risotto), Hong Kong Cafe, and Master Spicy Noodle.

The Datong District is a great area to visit with many Taipei attractions and is the best district to stay in Taipei for the authentic Taiwanese experience. You’ll also find some of the best restaurants, cafe and shopping. This is the best area to stay in Taipei since you have easy access to many Taipei Tourist attractions, food and shopping. If you’re looking for where to go in Taipei, Datong District is a great start to your Taiwanese adventure!

Where to stay in Taipei? The Datong District!

The best place to stay in Taipei’s Datong District is by the MRT stations. The Taipei MRT system is incredibly fast with a train arriving every 2-3 minutes giving you easy access to all Taipei tourist attractions.

Zhongshan Station (Red Line)

As mentioned above, the area around Zhongshan Station is the best area to stay in Taipei for shopping, food, Taipei tourist attractions and the best things to do in Taipei.

Shuanglian Station (Red Line)

There are so many good restaurants and local places for shopping between Shuanglian Station and Zhongshan Station. If you’re looking for where to stay in Taipei, this is it!

  • FANCY: Regent Taipei is so fancy, they have Japanese bidet toilets and a rooftop pool!
  • COMFORTABLE: Beauty Hotels is fancy and extremely affordable, but that’s were you sacrifice some space.
  • BUDGET: No hostels in this area, but comfortable hotels are around $40 USD.

Beimen Station Hotels (Green Line)

Beimen station is also considered the best place to stay in Taipei because you have easy access to Daodaocheng for day time activities, Ximen for nightlife and Taipei Main Station that connects you to the rest of Taiwan.

  • FANCY: This is a local neighborhood. No fancy hotels .
  • COMFORTABLE: CitizenM located right next to the North Gate (Beimen). You’ll have a classic view of Taiwan’s most preserved buildings.
  • BUDGET: Taipei 109 Hostel simple and extremely affordable.

Taipei Main Station Hotels (Red and Blue Line)

Taipei Main Station is one of my favorite places because of all the food and shopping. There’s so many things to do in Taipei Main Station, you could spend hours in all the connected underground malls shopping, dining or even buying glasses.

  • FANCY: Meander 1948: Extremely hip hotel just North of Taipei Main Station with those New York Loft vibes at affordable Taiwan prices.
  • COMFORTABLE: Ulysses Hotel: Basic, modern, simple and affordable. Next to Taipei Main Station and Q-Square Mall.
  • BUDGET: Homey Hostel: Basic hostel and super low prices. Save your money for more food!

Minquan West Road Station (Red and Orange Line)

Minquan West Road is at the northern edge of the Datong District. It’s a little far from most of the notable locations but it’s right on the red and orange line giving you a lot of access to Taipei.

Datong District is the best district to stay in Taipei!

Of these MRT stations, Beimen, Zhongshan and Shuanglian can all be accessed through underground malls connecting through Taipei Main Station. You can walk as far as Shuanglian Station to Beimen Station (2.1km) all through underground malls! It’s the best way to avoid the rain in Taipei!

2. Zhongzheng District

Zhongzheng District is the next best place to stay in Taipei. Since Zhongzheng District borders Datong District, you won’t be too far away from Taipei’s best district to stay in. You can see all the Taipei tourist attractions in Datong District during the day and then check out the nightlife in Ximen. Taipei Main Station gives you easy access to the rest of Taiwan.

If you’re looking for where to stay in Taipei for one night, Zhongzheng District is the best area, especially by Taipei Main Station. Zhongzheng District features some of the best Taipei attractions.

Where To Go in Taipei’s Zhongzheng District:

  • Taipei Main Station for lots of food and shopping! Taipei Main Station is very unique. You’ll find everything from McDonald’s to Michelin rated restaurants! Try Hot Star Chicken while you’re here. It’s the same place that you’ll find in Ximen but without the line.
  • Taipei City Mall: The best place for budget shopping and souvenirs. Under Taipei Main Station, walking around this mall is approximately 1 miles (1.6km).
  • 2/28 Peace Park: Taipei’s peaceful park for remembrance of a tragic event.
  • National Taiwan Museum and Natural History/Bank Museum: A ticket for access to both museums is only NT $30 ($1 USD). It’s kind of funny that they have a Dinosaurs combined with a Bank Museum, but it’s still very interesting!
  • National Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall: Various events happen here throughout the week and is lit beautifully at night.
  • Liberty Arch Square: Connected to the Chiang Kai-Shek area and lit beautifully at night. You’ll find this place to be very active at night by fitness enthusiasts and street dancers.
  • Natural Museum of History: Incredibly beautiful exhibits!
  • Taipei Botanical Garden: Beautiful gardens that take you outside of the city and back to nature!
  • Nanjichang Night Market: This is a very local night market. You won’t see many signs in English and the prices will be significantly lower than in Shilin (tourist night market). Most of the food is okay and costs less than NT $30.
  • Huashan 1914 Creative Park: There’s something happening here almost every weekend! Multiple exhibition spaces constantly rotating. They even have a movie theatre and several really good restaurants at Huashan 1914 Creative Park.
  • Syntrend Mall: This is where you can find the most up to date and modern tech/gadgets in Taiwan! Featuring the best computer parts, modern household equipment, video games, anime, toys, Virtual Reality Arcade, maid cafe, clothing and accessories! On weekends they tend to have events for video game promotions. This is one of my favorite malls in Taipei and I go here often just to use the massage chairs for free.
  • Guanghua Digital Plaza: As big as Syntrend and connected by several bridges. At Guanghua Digital Plaza you can get almost any electronic component, repair your digital equipment and get deals on new or used items. Some places you’ll have to negotiate since you can get the “tourist price” here.
  • Evergreen Maritime Museum: From navy boats to dragon boats and even the Titanic!
  • Butterfly & Insect Museum: Not for everyone, but very educational!
  • Qidong Street: A neighborhood made up of old Japanese houses.
  • Jizhouan Literature Forest: Japanese Colonial Period house that has been converted to a culture center with events and exhibitions.
  • Gonguan Waterfront Plaza: Outdoors bars, live music, and lots of area to play. You can also rent bikes here (bring an ID or passport) and ride bikes along the river.
  • Taipei Water Park: Mostly for young children to cool down when it’s hot. Entry for adults is NT $50 and for kids it’s NT $25.
  • Treasure Hill Guanyin Temple: Modernized Buddhist temple featuring art installations, galleries and cafes.

Where to stay in Taipei? The Zhongzheng District!

The Zhongzheng district is kind of an odd shape and reaches a lot of different stations. I’ll focus on the stations that worth staying by.

Taipei Main Station

Where to stay in Taipei for one night? Taipei Main Station is extremely convenient because you’ll have easy access to the Airport MRT, it’s a short walk to the Ximen area for late night food, drinks and entertainment, and Taipei Main Station has a bunch of underground malls and shops!

  • COMFORT+: Green World Taipei Main Station is comfortable and in a great location for around $80 USD/night
  • COMFORTABLE: Beauty Hotels is fancy and very affordable hotel. The location is 5-minutes to Ximen, Taipei Main Station, NTU hospital and located right next to 2/28 Peace Park.
  • BUDGET: Poshpacker Hotel Tiny 1 bed private rooms at hostel prices. Great for the hostel experience, without the hostel sleeping experience.

Ximen Station

Ximen (aka “Ximending”) is the best place area to stay for tourists. Lots of signs are in English, it’s easy to order food, lots of colorful lights and nightlife. At night, you’ll find many street performers in the area so take a slow walk through the many streets in Ximen. For nightlife, there are many places in this area are open until 3am, but remember that the MRT only runs until midnight. You’ll have to use an Uber or Taxi after that…or you can just stay in Ximen.

Dongmen Station

Many tourists come to Dongmen Station to get to Yong Kang Street. One of the most popular places to visit in Taipei for food and souvenirs. There’s only a handful of places I think are good in this area, but you should explore!

My absolute favorite Taiwanese Onion Pancake is here. You’ll see a long line and it’s worth the wait! Get it spicy! Soypresso does the best tofu ice cream you’ll ever have. Super creamy and healthier than traditional ice cream. Din Tai Fung is amazing, but the wait at this location is always over 2 hours! As a very respectable alternative, I go to Hangzhou Xiao Long Bao.

  • FANCY: Royal Biz Hotel is the fanciest hotel in the Dongmen area…it’s not that fancy though.
  • COMFORTABLE: Chaiin Hotel is very modern and clean
  • BUDGET: Dongmen Hotel is a small hotel with private rooms at a super low price

Taipower Building Station

This is a great area for cheap and good food! Lots of cafes, boba shops and quick bites because this is located near two colleges. There aren’t many hotels in this area so if you want to stay in this area, you’ll have a better shot with airbnb.

  • COMFORTABLE: Li Yuan Hotel is located right on the main street by Taipower Building Station.
  • BUDGET: Star House is right in the heart of Shida night market. It’s a hip area with shopping, cafe’s, hair salons and lots of local foods

3. Xinyi District

Xinyi District has the fanciest places to visit in Taipei. As for all the Taipei attractions, this is the most expensive area with the most amount of shopping malls. If you’re looking for places to visit in Taipei that involve food, shopping and nightlife, the Xinyi District is for you!

What To Do In Taipei’s Xinyi District:

  • Xiangti Avenue Plaza: Catch the street performances on the shopping street between all the malls that goes from Taipei City Hall Station to Taipei 101 Station, you can find many street performances and exhibits at night. This is the unofficial Taipei attractions that occurs nightly thanks to various street performers.
  • Taipei 101: Go up to the 89th floor, grab a beer, snack and take in the view! One of the best Taipei tourist spots for views.
  • Leo’s Playland: If you’re traveling in Taipei with kids this is a great spot for the family.
  • Jimmy’s Moon Bus: Dream big and be inspired at one of the most underrated places to visit in Taiwan.
  • Chess Taipei: One of the many nightclubs in the area. If you’re looking to Taipei nightlife, the Xinyi district is ideal for you.

Where To Stay In Taiwan’s Xinyi District:

Xinyi is known for where to stay in Taiwan for shopping and nightlife. You can find the highest end hotels, night clubs and bars in all of Taiwan with plenty of Taipei nightlife options to choose from.

  • FANCY: W Taipei: Hip and extremely luxurious.
  • COMFORTABLE: At Boutique Hotel is an affordable stay in this extremely expensive area.
  • BUDGET: Work Inn 101: An extremely affordable and clean hostel right next to Taipei 101.

4. Zhongshan District

Taipei’s Zhongshan District should really be considered as two parts, North of the Keelung River is considered the “Dazhi area” and South of the Keelung River is considered the Zhongshan District. On the north side of the Zhongshan area, it feels like a very suburban area. It’s not a great place to stay because you won’t really feel like you’re staying in Taipei.

On the South side of the Zhongshan District, it will feel more like Taipei! Lots of food, culture and activities!

What To See In Taipei’s Zhongshan District:

  • Yuanshan Park: A huge park with activities each weekend. You can find people selling all types of products here during the weekend.
  • Expo Dome: Something is always happening here all day and all night. Events happen here every weekend, you can catch dance groups practicing their moves, lots of food stalls, places to drink and a nightclub.
  • Children’s Art Education Center: Inspire the next generation of artists here!
  • Taipei Fine Arts Museum: Take in some culture at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum!
  • Fine Arts Park: Go for a walk while enjoying the art installations for free.
  • Laodifang Lookout: Take a hike up to the Laodifang Lookout to see all of Taipei!
  • Flip Out Indoor Trampoline Centre: Get a lot of exercise and have a lot of fun! Great for kids and adults!
  • National Revolutionary Martyrs’ Shrine: Remember the past and take in the amazing architecture!
  • 823 Artillery Battle Memorial Park: Take a look at some of the historic war memorabilia.
  • Grand Hotel Taipei: This is Taipei’s first hotel! It’s extremely “grand”, decadent and luxurious. Many people hold their wedding ceremonies here due to the grandeur. Unfortunately, it’s not easy to access since it’s not near any MRT station.
  • ATT4Recovery: So many things to do in Taipei malls from food and shopping!
  • Golf Driving Range: A great place to get some exercise and relieve stress.
  • Miramar Mall: The only mall in Taipei with a large ferris wheel on the roof!
  • Addiction Aquatic Development: A very strange name, but an amazing place for cheap seafood and sushi! High quality at low prices!
  • Garden Maze: Bring bug repellent because you might be here for awhile.
  • Partyworld: Sing the night away at this karaoke facility. Food and drinks are available inside and they’re open from 5pm-7am daily!
  • Miniatures Museum: Come here and feel like a giant!

Where to stay in Taipei’s Zhongshan District:

The Zhongshan district is massive and contains some of the nicest hotels in Taipei.

Jinnan Road Station

  • FANCY: Grand Mayfull Hotel is super luxurious and has a rooftop pool! Rooftop pools in Taipei are very rare!
  • DIFFERENT: Sato Castle Motel from the outside looks like a castle and has themed rooms…but it’s because it’s a “Love Hotel.”

Zhongshan Station

As mentioned above, the area around Zhongshan Station is the best area to stay in Taipei for shopping, food, Taipei tourist attractions and the best things to do in Taipei.

Shuanglian Station

There are so many good restaurants and local places for shopping between Shuanglian Station and Zhongshan Station. If you’re looking for where to stay in Taipei, this is it!

Nanjing Fuxing Station

  • FANCY: Les Suites Chine Cheng is in an amazing location. Right next to the MRT and lots of good restaurants.
  • COMFORTABLE: FX Hotel is comfy and a short walk to the MRT station.

5. Da’an District

Da’an District is pretty his for it’s restaurants and shopping. Many Taipei Sightseeing tourists visit Taipei for the famous dessert spots and the original Din Tai Fung.

Where To Stay In Taiwan’s Da’an District:

  • FANCY: Royal Biz Hotel is not the fanciest hotel, but is the fanciest in this area.
  • COMFORTABLE: Chaiin Hotel is located right next to the Dongmen MRT Station for easy access to all of Taipei.
  • BUDGET: Dongmen 3 Capsule Inn is a capsule hotel so you get that extra privacy. That privacy is much better than the best hostel in Taipei.

6. Wanhua District

The most popular spot in the Wanhua district is the Ximen (AKA Ximending) area. If you’re looking for where to stay in Taipei for one night, this is a great location that has a lot to offer.

Ximen Station

  • FANCY: Ximending Center4 in the absolute heart of Ximen. It will be noisy though so I would recommend something not in the most crowded part of Ximen.
  • COMFORTABLE: Energy Inn clean and in centrally located in Ximen.
  • BUDGET: Ximen Wow Hostel is the best hostel in Taipei for the Ximen area.

7. Songshan District

Taipei’s Songshan district may not be the best district to stay in Taipei, but it’s definitely worth a visit! Raohe night market is all about the food! And if you need time to burn calories between meals, take a walk on Rainbow Bridge!

Where To Stay in Taipei’s Songshan District?

The only place worth staying in the Songshan District is at Songshan Station. If you’re looking for where to stay in Taipei for one night, this is a great option! You have late night food Raohe Night Market and late night shopping at Wufenpu Shopping District.

Songshan Station

  • FANCY: Amba Hotel is right next to Songshan Stations for easy access to Raohe Night Market and the Wufenpu Shopping District.
  • COMFORTABLE: Charming City Hotel SungShan is located right in the heart of Raohe Night Market. The best place to stay in Taipei for foodies.
  • BUDGET: D.Giraffe Your Space is a budget hotel that gives you a lot of value your money.

8. Shilin District

Shilin District is best known for the Shilin Night Market. It’s one of the most popular tourists spots in Taiwan. Once you get there, you’ll see all the tourists! But Shilin District has a lot more to offer than just food!

  • FANCY: The Tango Taipei JianTan is perfect is you plan on getting a food coma at Shilin Night Market.
  • COMFORTABLE: Greatt Hotel has nothing to do with Frosted Flakes but is a good spot when looking for where to stay in Taiwan.
  • BUDGET: Mono Hostel is the best hostel in Taipei for food access.

9. Beitou District

Beitou District is at the most northern end of Taipei and is known for the Beitou Hot Springs and Hiking. The Beitou District also has a very Japanese presence seen through the architecture of the buildings.

What To Do in Taipei’s Beitou District:

  • Yangmingshan Flower Clock: Hike up to this working clock made in the flowers.
  • Xiaoyoukeng Recreation Area: See some geothermal action! Hot sulfuric smoke is a sight to behold in this area.
  • Zhuzihu: A must for Taipei sightseeing! This is one of Taiwan’s best national parks!
  • Yangmingshan Chungshan Hall: One of the hardest places to visit in Taiwan, but that makes it easy to avoid the tourist crowds.
  • Taipei Aowanda: Have a meal right in nature! Once of the only places to visit in Taiwan that allows you to dine in the water.
  • Qingtiangang Grassland: An entire day hike through the grasslands! You’ll run into animals and a big waterfall. One of the best
  • Junjianyan: One of the best places to visit in Taiwan for a grand view of Taipei
  • Dharma Drum Mountain Nung Chan Monastery: A monastery unlike anything you’ve seen before. This is an incredibly modern facility.
  • Guandu Nature Park: One of the best places to visit in Taiwan for bird watching! It’s also a great place to walk around and get back to nature…while still having easy access to the city.
  • Guanda Temple: For temples, this is what to see in Taipei. Incredibly elaborate designs will impress any visitor.
  • Thermal Valley: Of all the Taipei Attractions, this is free! See the steaming waters of the natural hot springs.
  • Sulfur Valley Recreation Area: One of the best Taipei tourist spots to hike around thermal baths. You can stop to soak your feet and there are restroom facilities.
  • 山之林SPA溫泉美食餐廳: A restaurant with multiple private and public spas. They also offer natural spring water for drinking.
  • Tianmu Creative Market: The best place to buy local works of art and sculptures.
  • The Top: One of the most comfortable places to visit in Taiwan with the best views of Taipei! Not only is this a restaurant, it’s a pool party! With cabanas and plenty or areas to lounge around with an infinity pool facing the city. Bring your swimsuit!
  • Xinbeitou Historic Station: A wooden train station that looks like it’s from a Studio Ghibli film. Simple and beautiful.
  • Beitou Public Hotspring: Many people come here to take a dip in the hot spring. There are more premium places if you want a nicer experience.
  • Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch: This is a beautiful library with lots of outdoor seating. Come here to take a break from searching for what to see in Taipei and recharge in nature.
  • Beitou Hot Spring Museum: No longer a functioning hot spring, but a museum. Experience the architecture and design of the classic Japanese style. You’ll get those Studio Ghibli vibes from Spirited Away.

Where To Stay in Taipei’s Beitou District:

Taipei’s Beitou district is primarily known for it’s hot springs. I’ll recommend 3 hotels that have private hot springs, some will be fancy and some will just use the hot spring water.

10. Neihu District

The Neihu district is in Taipei’s most North-Eastern corner. You can get to the MRT, but it’s the most inconvenient place to stay in Taipei for tourists. I don’t recommend staying in this area for travelers because you’ll spend too much time getting to/from the Neihu district.

But if you love nature, you should make it out to the many outdoor activities in Neihu District!

Where To Go In Taipei’s Neihu District:

This part of Taipei is pretty far from the typical Taipei tourist attractions. However, it is a great place to stay if you plan on hiking in Taipei. There are many trails and temples to visit in the Neihu District.

Dahu Park Station

COMFORTABLE: The Koos Hotel is affordable and right next to the MRT station. It’s a great home base if you plan on hiking in Taipei.

11. Nangang District

Nangang District is at the eastern end of Taipei. There’s much more nature than city in the Nangang District so there aren’t many hotels. I don’t recommend staying in this area because it’s too far away from the rest of Taipei.

12. Wenshan District

Wenshan District is at the South-Eastern end of Taipei. I don’t recommend staying in this area because it’s too far from the rest of Taipei. Your visit to Taipei will mostly be commuting, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t visit the Wenshan District.

Where To Go In Taipei’s Wenshan District:

  • Taipei Zoo: Lots of animals and it’s great for all ages. Bring bug spray though, lots of bugs in this area.
  • Maokong Gondola: From the Taipei Zoo Station, take a short walk to the Maokong Gondola and ride it up for access to trails, temples and food!
  • Chih Nan Temple: If you make it up the Maokong Gondola, Chih Nan Temple should absolutely be visited.

There are 12 districts in Taipei and each one can offer a different experience for a traveler:

Best District To Stay In Taipei?

For travelers the best district to stay in Taipei is Datong, Zhongzheng or Xinyi.

Where To Stay in Taipei For One Night?

If you’re only on a layover or staying in Taipei for a short time, you should stay by Taipei Main Station. You’ll have easy access to places to visit in Taipei: Ximen (aka Ximending) for nightlife, Daodaocheng during the day for old-world Taiwan and plenty of options for food and shopping within Taipei Main Station.

Uber Taiwan: Uber Taipei Prices

Uber is available in some parts of Taiwan but Uber Taipei is incredibly abundant. During non-peak hours, Uber Taipei is going to be about 20% cheaper than a taxi.

There’s two reasons why I prefer Uber Taipei over a local taxi:

  1. It’s cheaper.
  2. You can input your destination and not have worry about a language barrier.

As for the Uber Taipei Prices, during non-peak hours, it will cost you about NT $300 to get across the city. If you’re not going very far, typical costs are less than NT $150.

In Taiwan, you don’t have to tip taxi drivers. When I first came to Taiwan, I tried tipping and the driver returned my money. This was a taxi driver that was stationed at Taipei Main Station too! With the Uber app, you can also order a metered taxi if you wanted one.
